What is Precision Teaching and how ABC will be using it?

Precision Training for Autism

After attending an inspirational workshop about Precision Teaching, given by Tracey Mapp and Thanos Vostanis from the Tizard Center at Kent University, we are very excited to begin using the principles of Precision Teaching and the Standard Celeration Chart (SCC) with some of the individuals we support at of All Behaviour Consultancy.

Precision Teaching focuses on four main principles which are

  • The child/learner knows be

  • Focus on observable behaviours and describe these using pinpoints

  • Use frequency measurements

  • Use the Standard Celeration Chart (SCC)

We love these principles at All Behaviour Consultancy. We always adopt a person-centred approach and aim to focus on the person and the environment.

We wholeheartedly believe that the child knows best, which means that if the individual is not learning, then it is due to the environment or the teaching methods.

We focus on looking at changing the environment or our approach when we feel our learners are being hindered.

Our commitment to using frequency measurements, when applicable at ABC was reinforced during the conference. Frequency measures show how many responses occurred in a specific time frame.

This makes it easier to compare across days and sessions to assess the effectiveness of our interventions better.

The speakers were very informative and showed how effective the SCC can be at displaying data for a variety of behaviours, both for learning new skills and reducing of challenging behaviours.

The charts will allow us at All Behaviour Consultancy to assess our learner’s needs more accurately and make decisions based on data more effectively.

For some of our learners, we will begin using the SCC to refine interventions and help us teach more effectively. And for others, they may even be able to use Precision Teaching to support their own learning, as it lends itself nicely to self-monitoring. It is exciting to think some of our learners can use this tool themselves!
